Cheyenne doppler radar offline after hardware fault: local weather coverage interrupted


Cheyenne’s National Weather Service radar has gone offline after a hardware failure, forcing local forecasters to lean on regional radar coverage while a replacement part is en route. The interruption reduces direct radar readings over the city and could affect the granularity of short-term storm tracking until repairs are completed.

The affected unit is the station’s KCYS Doppler installation — one of the National Weather Service’s NEXRAD sites that monitor precipitation and wind patterns across the Plains. The Cheyenne office notified the public on its Facebook page that a component failure has taken the system out of service and that replacement parts have been ordered, but offered no firm timeline for restoration.

Because the NEXRAD network overlaps across states, meteorologists in Cheyenne can still analyze data from nearby towers to maintain forecasts. A National Weather Service meteorologist told Cap City News the office will rely on radars in neighboring communities to track large-scale systems and issue warnings as needed.
