Whitney and Dell Range intersection closed Monday: multi-week water main work to disrupt commutes

The rural junction of Whitney Road and Dell Range Boulevard in east Cheyenne will be shut for several weeks beginning Monday, Aug. 24, as crews adjust a water main. The closure is expected to affect daily commuters, delivery routes and school traffic while work is underway.

Simon Contractors will close the intersection in the early hours of Monday to move the water line that crosses the roadway, the southeast Wyoming district of WYDOT confirmed. Officials say the stoppage is temporary but could last a few weeks as crews complete the relocation and safety checks.

Crews will relocate a water main crossing the roadway, requiring a temporary closure.

Drivers should plan for the following detour routing while the intersection is closed:

  • Eastbound: Turn south at College Drive (about a mile back), continue on Lincolnway, then proceed to Christensen Road and follow on to Four Mile Road.
  • Westbound: Follow the same roads in reverse order to return toward the closure.
  • Expect added travel time during peak hours; signage and flaggers will guide traffic through the area.

WYDOT is urging motorists to follow posted signs, obey flaggers and avoid distractions while driving through the work zone to protect both workers and travelers. Local officials also remind emergency services and school transportation coordinators that routes will change during the project.

The water-main adjustment is part of routine infrastructure maintenance, but it carries practical consequences: delayed commutes, altered delivery schedules for businesses in east Cheyenne, and potential congestion on alternate streets as traffic is redistributed.

For the latest updates, including changes to timing or detour patterns, check the southeast Wyoming WYDOT district’s Facebook page or contact the district directly. Motorists should allow extra time and consider alternate routes when possible while the intersection is closed.
