A Florida woman stands accused of deliberately setting fire to the home where she had recently moved back in an attempt to repair her marriage and join her family for their son’s 18th birthday. Authorities say the blaze, discovered shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Monday, left the house heavily damaged and now raises questions about domestic conflict escalating into a criminal act.
Firefighting crews find a house fully involved
Citrus County responders arrived to find heavy flames at a residence in the 4900 block of South Powell Point in Homosassa. Fire crews worked about an hour to bring the blaze under control, and investigators later concluded there were signs the fire had been started intentionally.

The probable-cause affidavit filed by investigators describes physical evidence recovered at the scene that suggested an accelerant was used. Officers also reported seeing the suspect seated nearby with a bottle later identified as containing lighter fluid.
Family tensions, a birthday and an alleged escalation
The homeowner’s son, who turned 18 on March 17, told police his parents had been living separately. He said his mother moved back into the house ahead of his birthday so the family could celebrate together and with the hope of mending the marriage.
According to the affidavit, arguments resumed almost immediately after she returned. The son said he chose to leave the house the morning of the fire to avoid being caught in what he described as a “toxic” relationship. The night before the blaze, investigators say the woman used a hammer to make several holes in an interior wall.

- Incident time: Shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Monday

The homeowner told investigators he was outside charging his phone in his car when he heard his wife shout before he noticed the house on fire. Officers later arrested Dunham; her recorded statement to detectives is redacted in the affidavit.
What this means going forward
Arson carries serious criminal penalties and can endanger neighbors and first responders as well as household members. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office and the fire department will continue the investigation to establish motive and the full timeline of events before prosecutors decide on formal charges beyond the current arson allegation.
For now, the family faces the aftermath of a burned home and pending court proceedings. The case underscores how domestic disputes can lead to severe and far-reaching consequences when they escalate to violence and property destruction.
