A Florida woman was arrested after deputies say she left her three children outside a hospital following an argument over a dying pet — an episode that investigators say exposed long‑running neglect at the family home. The case, which led to child welfare involvement and criminal charges, raises immediate questions about the children’s safety and the condition of the household they were taken from.
According to court documents, hospital staff alerted authorities on April 30 when a young boy walked into the emergency department alone around midday, barefoot and telling personnel that his mother had dropped him off after becoming upset. He reported that his two siblings had been left nearby.
Deputies later found the boy walking along a roadway and returned him to the hospital, where child protective investigators interviewed all three children. The affidavit describes a chaotic home life and details from the siblings that prompted criminal charges.

Mother strands three children barefoot at hospital after blaming them for pet’s death, police say
What investigators say they found
- Children told officials their mother’s behavior had escalated earlier that morning after she discovered another family dog had died; the affidavit says at least one other pet had recently died at the home.
- One child said pets in the house were often underfed; another described being regularly locked out of the residence and sometimes sleeping outdoors.
- On the day of the incident, the children said their mother drove them to the hospital, ordered them out of the vehicle and did not return to collect them.
- Deputies who visited the home reported a strong odor of garbage and feces at the front door, flies on an infant in the care of the woman, multiple dogs inside the house and a deceased dog in the garage.
- Video supplied by a neighbor captured a woman believed to be the defendant shouting and using violent language during an earlier dispute, according to the affidavit.
Investigators contacted the woman at her residence later the same day. She was reportedly holding an infant she had been babysitting and told deputies she believed the hospital was an appropriate place to leave the children. She also blamed one of the children for the pet’s death and expressed frustration with the children’s behavior, saying she planned to leave the area.
Flagler County deputies arrested 58‑year‑old Sandra Teague last week. Court records show she faces three counts of child neglect and abandonment. Authorities seized her phone as evidence and took the children into protective custody.
Teague is being held at the Flagler County Jail on a $150,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on May 26.
Why this matters now
The episode highlights both immediate welfare concerns for the three children and broader community issues: possible animal cruelty in the home, potential ongoing neglect, and what neighbors describe as repeated disturbances. Local child protective services will determine whether the children can safely return to the household or require longer-term placement.
Law enforcement officials continue to review evidence collected at the scene and in interviews. The case also underscores how medical staff and emergency departments can play a critical role in spotting and reporting at‑risk children when they appear alone or in distress.
Authorities have not released additional identifying details about the children or information about their current placement. The arraignment on May 26 will be the next scheduled public step in the criminal case.
