A vast warehouse full of medical supplies burned through Thursday in Tracy, Calif., sending dense smoke across the industrial park and prompting evacuations at neighboring logistics centers. The blaze threatens local air quality and could disrupt distribution of medical goods as crews work to contain the fire and investigators seek its cause.
The fire began at a distribution center operated by Medline, located roughly 55 miles east of San Francisco, and quickly consumed the 1 million-square-foot facility. Flames jumped the street to a nearby FedEx site before firefighters stopped further spread, South San Joaquin County Fire Authority Chief Randall Bradley said.

Firefighters faced multiple complications as they battled the inferno: a sprinkler system at the warehouse appeared to be inoperative and several hydrants supplying the site showed low pressure. Bradley described a combination of high winds, hot temperatures and dry air that accelerated the fire’s growth.
“Conditions worked against us,” he told reporters, noting the difficulties were tied to the warehouse’s internal systems rather than the city water mains. No injuries among staff were reported and Medline confirmed all employees at the facility were accounted for.
Sgt. Michael Richards of the Tracy Police Department said authorities ordered broad evacuations of businesses in the immediate area after wind increased the risk that embers could ignite other buildings. Tracy Mayor Dan Arriola emphasized the blaze remained inside the city’s main industrial zone and away from residential neighborhoods; no homes were listed for evacuation.
Why this matters now
The site is a major distribution hub for medical-surgical products — including gloves, masks and other pandemic-era essentials — meaning the fire has the potential to affect supply chains at a time when logistics remain tightly scheduled. Local officials are also monitoring air quality for nearby communities as thick smoke rose over the park.
- Location: Tracy industrial park, 55 miles east of San Francisco
- Facility size: About 1 million square feet (≈93,000 m²)
- Immediate impact: Medline facility engulfed; FedEx site damaged but fire contained there; Amazon and other centers evacuated
- Operational issues: Malfunctioning sprinkler system and low hydrant pressure at the warehouse
- Health & safety: Air quality under evaluation; no worker injuries reported; no residential evacuations
- Weather: High temperature near 99°F with low humidity and strong winds
Medline said it is working with first responders and assessing the damage; a company spokesperson said more information will be provided as it becomes available. City officials said investigators are on site to determine the fire’s origin but had not reached a conclusion.
The blaze highlights two pressing concerns for authorities: the resilience of emergency systems inside large warehouses and the broader consequences when a major distribution node is taken offline. For now, containment and air monitoring remain the priorities as crews press on through the afternoon heat.
Officials warned residents to expect lingering smoke in the area while the situation remains active and said they will update the public when investigators complete their initial findings.
