A California man has been jailed after authorities say he killed his 2-year-old son and tried to attack other family members in San Juan Bautista, police said. The arrest followed a brief pursuit and an interview in which investigators say the suspect admitted his role, though his motive remains unclear.
What authorities say happened
San Benito County deputies were dispatched after a 911 call reporting an unresponsive toddler at a home on The Alameda in San Juan Bautista, about 45 miles south of San Jose. Emergency crews found the child unconscious, transported him to a pediatric hospital and the boy was later pronounced dead.

The child’s mother, a 34-year-old woman, told deputies she woke to find the suspect attacking her; she was able to fend him off and escaped. She then discovered the toddler on a living-room couch and called 911. A 4-year-old who was in the home at the time was not physically harmed, according to the report.

Investigation and arrest
Deputies followed the vehicle they say the suspect left in, using traffic-camera footage to trace him into Merced County. Law enforcement pursued and took him into custody after what the department described as a physical encounter.
During an interview with detectives, Lujan is alleged to have confessed to killing his son. Sheriff Eric Taylor told local media investigators believe the suspect planned to harm other family members before being interrupted, but officials said they have not yet determined a clear motive.
Arrested and now booked on multiple counts, Lujan could face additional charges as investigators continue to review evidence from the scene and interviews with witnesses.
Why this case matters now
Beyond the immediate tragedy, the incident highlights gaps that often surface in domestic-violence and child-protection cases: how warning signs are detected, how quickly law enforcement can respond, and what resources are available to survivors and children after an attack.
Local officials have not released a timeline for upcoming court proceedings. Meanwhile, sheriff’s investigators continue to collect evidence to support charging decisions and to try to establish why the alleged attack occurred.
