Petaflop! Celebrating Cheyenne & Technology
Do you know what the meaning of “petaflop” is?
Well today “petaflop” means, that UCAR/NCAR is commemorating the City of Cheyenne‘s 150th anniversary by naming their new computer “Cheyenne.” The supercomputer has made a powerful influence on the local economy. It was made possible through private and public partnership to grow the importance of UCAR/NCAR facility around the globe.
Long-term weather prediction is critical for a variety of industries like agriculture and even the military. Therefore, having a new computer here in this Center that is three times faster and more efficient will lead to many important advancements.
During the inauguration of the new “Cheyenne” computer Wyoming Governor Matt Mead, City of Cheyenne Mayor Marian Orr, University of Wyoming President Laurie Nichols and many others shared words regarding this important moment in history.
Therefore, “petaflop” really is a description for a computer’s speed, but today it means the speed of where the Cheyenne area has been and going. The future is bright!
