Labor Day is a nationally celebrated holiday, one with a rich and important history, much more than sales and getting a day off work. The late 19th century and early 20th century was monumental in establishing worker’s rights and traditions during a time where they were previously nonexistent, and part of that movement included the introduction of Labor Day.
The invention of the Labor Day holiday can be traced back to two individuals, Matthew Maguire and Peter J. McGuire. It can’t be said with certainty, though, which of the two men can be truly credited with creating the idea of Labor Day. The first celebration of Labor Day was held in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. In following years, more and more states adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Labor Day became an official federal holiday.
