We Need a Lesson Plan for Improving the State of Education

Earlier this week, we celebrated the International Day of Education, a day established by the United Nations in 2018 to highlight the vital role education plays in creating sustainable societies. Your Wyoming Chamber of Commerce has the improvement of our education system high on our priority list, as an educated and prepared workforce is essential for the future of our economy. A competitive workforce starts with quality education. For the youth of our state entering the workforce and those seeking to advance their careers, we need an education system that supports individuals across all industries and life stages.
By the numbers: According to the U.S. Chamber, two-thirds of fourth and eighth graders in the U.S. are not proficient in reading or math at their grade level. Globally, studies show that by 2030, 84 million children and youth will be out of school if current trends continue, and 300 million students will lack basic literacy and numeracy skills. For Wyoming, this is a call to action. We rely on a talent pool that is both skilled and versatile, whether in hands-on trades or advanced technical fields. Investing in education means investing in the future of our businesses. Without a strong foundation in math, literacy, and critical thinking, our workforce will struggle to meet the demands of industries that drive our economy, which can limit Wyoming’s competitiveness on the global stage.
Ensuring that our education systems are equipped to prepare students for careers in both traditional and emerging fields will help retain talent, strengthen our economy, and give businesses the skilled labor they need to thrive. This is not just about preparing individuals for a job—it’s about equipping them to excel in a rapidly changing and increasingly global economy.
By advocating for improved educational standards, we’re helping to create a workforce that will not only keep Wyoming competitive but will also ensure the state remains an ideal place for businesses to grow, innovate, and succeed.
