Strengthening Business: A Call for Action on U.S. Shipbuilding Policies

The U.S. faces a critical challenge as China dominates global shipbuilding, now controlling over 50% of the market. To protect American businesses and consumers, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has proposed policies that could impose significant fees on businesses using Chinese-made vessels, potentially raising shipping costs by 25% and adding $30 billion in new costs annually.
While the goal is to combat unfair practices, these policies risk hurting American workers, farmers, and industries that rely on global trade. Small businesses and farmers could face higher costs and fewer opportunities in the global market. Instead of penalizing U.S. industries, we need long-term solutions that strengthen American shipbuilding and global competitiveness.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is advocating for a balanced, strategic approach—one that promotes U.S. shipbuilding and supports American businesses. It’s time for policies that empower growth, foster innovation, and ensure a secure, prosperous future for American commerce.
