Union Pacific’s Locomotive No. 1943, The Spirit, is the 16th commemorative locomotive introduced in the 155-year-old company’s history. The Spirit honors the United States’ armed forces and the men and women filling their ranks. Created in collaboration with Union Pacific veterans, the locomotive illustrates the railroad’s connection to the thousands of veterans who helped build America through the centuries.

The design of the heritage locomotive dates back to the 1940s, however, its inspiration came about a year ago. Union Pacific Corporation board member, Gen. Charles C. Krulak, who served as the 31st Commandant of the Marine Corps, attended a farewell luncheon hosted in his honor by UPVETS, a Union Pacific employee group that supports veterans of the armed forces. He was presented with scale model of a veterans-themed Union Pacific locomotive painted by a local high school student. Krulak was pleased with the idea of a locomotive dedicated to honoring veterans, and asked Union Pacific Chairman, President and CEO Lance Fritz to make it a reality.

The locomotive will make its stop in Cheyenne on November 13th. This is a FREE event to the public, and will begin with a reception from 10:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. The locomotive will then be on display from 11 a.m. – noon.
