Hundreds in Laramie County experienced a “Monday morning’s dream” of staying in on a snowy day because of the government shutdown furloughs.
This morning letters were issued to “non-essential” federal employees informing them of their furloughed status because of the government shutdown. Primary employers, F.E. Warren Air Force Base (250+ furloughed) and the Wyoming Military Department (210+ furloughed) were affected heavily. Essential civilian employees and active duty service members will work unpaid until Congressional steps are taken to issue compensation. According to past reports more than 750 employees were furloughed in 2013 for 16 days. While today’s government shutdown will not have that same impact, our local military was diligently preparing for shutdown and this does have a direct impact on their mission.
In this particular situation all offices and services on F.E. Warren Air Force Base remained open aside from the pool and education center.
Another economic loss which affects the State of Wyoming during a shutdown includes that of the tourism industry. The impact will be especially difficult for national parks like Yellowstone and Devils Tower due to closures, reducing tourism impact.
