The Laramie County Community College Crossroads building is undergoing renovations to improve student engagement at the college.
The Crossroads Building has been vacant since January 2017 when the Clay Pathfinder Building opened. During the 2017 fall semester, there was a forum held by LCCC, as well as the project architects, Hord Coplan Macht, where students gave feedback of what they would like to see be included in this area.
A lot of the feedback included students wanting a place to engage with others and a space to do work.
“The purpose of this project was to create a student collaboration and engagement center,” LCCC’s vice president of administration and finance, Rick Johnson said. This project is estimated to cost $850,000 and “it can’t, by state statute, hit a $1 million or it requires legislative approval,” Johnson said.
The renovations will be funded by student fees from the student fee fund balance. The new area will be called the Student Engagement and Collaboration Center. Within the renovations, there will be an area for student collaboration. This
includes multiple seating areas, a fireplace, as well as a theatre area with a television. There will be a computer lab in the same room as the IT help desk, which is currently in the Fine Arts Building. There is also a self-service community café included in this renovation that will have kitchen essentials, as well as lockers that students can program to use during the day.
There will be a space for high school students as well, who are involved in programs at LCCC that help “introduce them to the college environment,” Johnson said.
The Student Veterans Association will have a space in the Crossroads Building too. The Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa and the Campus Activities Board will move to this area as well; however, that space is not included in the renovations.
The Wyoming Community College Commission will decide the final approval on Feb. 22.
