Godzilla Fights Blight
The demolition of the Carey & 17th Building, former Z’s Furniture Store, has opened the eyes of community members and visitors of Cheyenne.
Following the removal of the current building, the new City of Cheyenne Municipal Court will be constructed in the location. Occupant of the 2nd floor is yet to be determined by City Elected Officials. This decision is a step forward in Mayor Marian Orr’s Fight the Blight initiative which she campaigned on.
The Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce released a statement on social media, along with a photo playing off Godzilla’s destruction, “Ultimately it is hard to see a building that has been a part of our history for so long be demolished. However, it is important to use this as a reminder that property owners have a civic responsibility to make sure their properties are maintained and cared for. Their investment impacts citizens and visitors. Make Cheyenne the place that we all deserve it to be; safe, fun and vibrant!”
There are a variety of building’s downtown which are seeing new life. The land which previously was home to Cupid’s are residential units for downtown living. The Grier Building recently was purchased and has become the home to Array School of Technology & Design. Even the Frontier Hotel is now occupied by Napoli’s Restaurant and soon to open is the newly restored Metropolitan Restaurant across the street from the Carey & 17th Building.
