Splash Pad groundbreaking set for the day after Cheyenne Frontier Days.
The highly anticipated groundbreaking of the Cheyenne Depot’s Splash Pad is on the horizon. The pad costs more than $500,000; however, close to $300,000 of this was raised through donations. During 2018, 125 businesses, 30 nonprofits, and more than 150 individuals were successful in raising the $300k to fully fund the construction of a Splash Pad in downtown Cheyenne, 6 months ahead of schedule. Setbacks had pushed the completion date further out than anticipated.
This project will increase activity in the downtown area – the pad will create an interactive, lively, and fun environment for people of all ages. Downtown businesses will also benefit from increased traffic to the downtown area.
Darren Rudloff, President and CEO of Visit Cheyenne stated, “there will just be life on the plaza at all times…That not only helps visitors but it helps attract residents as well, which will create a livelier downtown with more shopping, more dining, more eating and drinking. All of those things are what we’re after here.”
Rudloff also addressed the environmental concerns associated with running water in the Splash Pad. He explained the system operates much like a swimming pool – the tank will be filled with water at the beginning of the summer and will continue to be filtered, recycled, and recirculated.
The ribbon cutting and grand opening is expected to launch in the late summer or early fall. Rocky Case, City Councilman Ward III reported Cheyenne Frontier Days is Cheyenne’s most economically beneficial week of the year, and the city aims to be cautious and cognizant of any disruptive construction during this time.
Case and Rudloff both commented on the economic benefits of this project – this is a very exciting development for downtown Cheyenne!
