Community Members are Empowering Young Readers
On Saturday, September 21 at 3pm the first annual “Empowering Young Readers” book drive will be held at the Laramie County Library.
The books collected will be donated to local child care centers and pre-schools. Studies have shown that by the age of 2, children who are read to regularly display greater language comprehension, larger vocabularies, and higher cognitive skills than their peers. Reading expands a child’s imagination and creates lifelong interest in reading.
Amber Hofmann is a kindergarten teacher at Baggs Elementary School. She is the founder of the “Empowering Young Readers” book drive. “As an educator, I see the effects of reading in the classroom every day. Kids who have been read to regularly are excited about reading and are more engaged in the classroom. I want help expand the libraries of area child care centers and preschools to help our kids get a jump start on learning. We all can make a big difference, and that starts with a book.”
They are requesting that community members bring their gently used books to donate. Child care centers and pre-schools are encouraged to call to be placed on the list of recipients for books collected. Call Amber Hofmann at 307-575-2876.
