In a landmark decision on Monday night, the Cheyenne City Council approved the acquisition of two cutting-edge facilities, signaling a major leap for the Cheyenne Community Recreation & Events portfolio.
The city is set to acquire the BEAST Foundation property on Sunflower Road for $4.25 million, a move that will revolutionize the Recreation Division’s sports offerings, especially for youth. With a generous $750,000 donation from BEAST Foundation owners, this 28,000 square-foot multi-purpose facility boasts volleyball, basketball, and pickleball courts, alongside versatile classroom and event spaces. This acquisition not only expands the current program but also grants the Recreation team the autonomy to program seven days a week, fostering community engagement.
“This purchase will give the Recreation team the opportunity to expand current programs, offer new programs, … and host community events,” said Jason Sanchez, Community Recreation & Events Director. “We’ve never owned our own gym space, so this is purchase provides opportunities we wouldn’t have otherwise.”
City Council also green-lit a $5.4 million contract with Richardson Construction for Cheyenne’s upcoming gymnastics facility, slated for completion by April 2025. Located beside the Ice & Events Center, the facility aims to meet the growing demand for gymnastics programs, accommodating 378 participants with an additional 316 on the waiting list. Funded by various sources, including the Real Property Revolving Fund and ARPA, this facility promises to be a game-changer for Cheyenne’s gymnastics enthusiasts.
The facility not only caters to current needs but also opens doors for potential expansions like cheer classes, tumbling, and a youth basketball court. The future of Cheyenne’s recreational landscape is brighter than ever.
“This will be a game changer for our gymnastics program,” said Sanchez. “There is a lot of interest for gymnastics in Cheyenne, and this facility will help meet that demand.”
