As America gears up for its 250th anniversary in 2026, The Civic Trust® unveils alarming data from a recent survey: more than 70% of Americans fail a basic civic literacy quiz.
Why it matters: Civic knowledge and skills are integral to the success of our nation, our economy, and our democracy.
There’s still hope: Workplaces are emerging as unifying forces where civil discourse and understanding can thrive.
-
Over 80% of Americans hold positive views of large and small businesses.
-
82% recognize the crucial role businesses can play in unifying people.
-
93% respond favorably to companies actively seeking to improve the country.
What they’re saying: “Poor understanding of the key tenets of U.S. citizenship is preventing many Americans from finding common ground. At best, the situation is deeply concerning – and, at worst, it’s a national security threat,” wrote Patrick J. Murphy and Thomas J. Rooney, former Congressmen, military veterans, and honorary co-chairs of the National Civics Bee®.
