Tuskegee Airman, Franklin Macon, visits Laramie County
Franklin J. Macon is 95 and is a famous Tuskegee Airman who presented today at the Laramie County Library.
His story is inspiring and one that overcomes many adversities. His story is featured the “I Wanted to be a Pilot: The Making of a Tuskegee Airman.” A book which is written for upper elementary and junior high school students.
The Tuskegee Airmen refers to a group of African-American military pilots who fought during World War II. Formed were the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Force. He always had wanted to be a pilot and the story explores his ambition to do so and explains is up bringing in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The conversation with Franklin was lively during the presentation. The best response to an audience question was when he was asked, “Why did you dislike school?”
His response was, “It was school.”
He further explained that he discovered later in his thirties he was suffering from dyslexia. He passed the Flight School test to be a pilot for WWll and to this day he doesn’t know how because he was so challenged with this reading disorder.
Local owner of RE/MAX Capitol Properties, Stephanie Prescott, along with the co-author, Elizabeth Harper championed the writing of this book to make sure Macon’s story carries on. The book is available for sale and a story of unique stories and discovery, as well as perseverance.
