1 Seminar was started as a development resource for artists in the show and surrounding area.
The Western Spirit show itself was started as a way to surface emerging artists and get them ready for the Western Art Show during Cheyenne Frontier Days. This was the next step in helping artists develop their skills and professional practices for shows and exhibits. The Artist Seminar has been in existence for over 20 years and is an event that fosters professional development.
“Each year they have time for 5 slots before they need to close the Carriage Hall for preparation for opening night.” shared Megen Hesser of the Old West Museum.
Three slots are filled by the jurors of the show who are a combination of art professionals and working artists in the region. The other presenters are art professionals or working artists. Typically they are chosen to compliment what the jurors’ topics, showcase what’s happening locally in the arts, or address issues which may happen within the Western Spirit Art Show specifically.
“A great example is our Curator Mike Kassel did a talk and demo on packing and shipping your art safely, which we recorded and will be made available through our YouTube channel soon.” explained Hesser.
The seminar this year was comprised of various artists and even included The Array of School of Technology & Design’s Eric Trowbridge.
