Will these Coastal Ports Strike Out?
The latest of many strike threats is growing across U.S. coasts. The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), representing 45,000 port workers from Maine to Texas, is threatening to strike on Oct. 1 if a new labor contract isn’t secured by Sept. 30.
These ports handle over half of America’s containerized imports and exports. A strike would reduce global shipping capacity, exacerbating market shortages and causing price spikes, delays, and turmoil ahead of the 2024 holiday season.
WY We Care: Though we’re landlocked, Wyoming businesses will feel the ripple effects of this potential strike. Our agricultural sector, among others, depends on these ports to connect to global markets. Disruptions here could cascade through supply chains nationwide, impacting businesses and consumers everywhere.
Small businesses, already operating on thin margins and facing a tight labor market and high inflation, would bear the brunt of this strike. Delays in shipments could halt operations, affecting workers and communities reliant on these businesses.
