Cheyenne high school artists take center stage at Capital City art show

This week Cheyenne’s young artists take center stage: the annual Capital City Art Show opens at Storey Gym from April 13–17, showcasing work from four local high schools and offering scholarships and a chance to advance to the statewide contest in Casper. The event brings attention to student portfolios at a moment when arts opportunities and funding are under close scrutiny.

Pieces from Central, East, South and Triumph high schools will be on display, spanning a range of media and styles created this school year. A selection of standout works will move on to the Wyoming State Art Symposium in Casper — the state’s only competition of its kind — where students can compete with peers from across Wyoming.

Retired art teacher and current judge Sarah Krank said the show celebrates students’ creativity and the hours they invest in developing their work, while also giving them tangible opportunities beyond the classroom.

Local companies back the event with scholarship money, collectively contributing thousands of dollars to participating students. Those awards are distributed during two scheduled gatherings: a VIP reception on April 13 and an Awards night on April 16.

  • When: April 13–17
  • Where: Storey Gym, Cheyenne
  • Participating schools: Central, East, South, Triumph
  • VIP reception: April 13, 4–6 p.m.
  • Awards night: April 16, 4–6 p.m.
  • Next stage: Selected works advance to the Wyoming State Art Symposium in Casper

For students, exhibiting at the Capital City Art Show can strengthen portfolios and raise visibility with scholarship committees and college admissions; for the community, the event is a practical expression of support for arts education. The presence of local scholarship funding underscores a continuing civic interest in sustaining creative programs at the high school level.

The exhibition runs through the week; attendees should consult school or district sources for daily viewing hours and any last‑minute updates.
