LCSD1 weighing $500K in contracts, $100K for middle and high school health textbooks

The Laramie County School District 1 Board of Trustees meets tonight to decide on several items that would shape school safety systems and health instruction — including contracts and materials totaling more than half a million dollars. These votes could affect day-to-day operations at an elementary campus and the health curriculum used in secondary classrooms beginning in 2026–27.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Storey Gym boardroom at 2811 House Ave., Cheyenne. Members of the public may join remotely via Zoom, and the session will be livestreamed on the district’s YouTube channel.

Agenda highlights

  • $412,000 professional services contract proposed with National Speaker and Sound (D.C. Sound Systems Inc.) for the purchase and installation of a new intercom and public address system at Alta Vista; the figure includes a 10% contingency.
  • Up to $100,000 sought for new health curriculum for junior and senior high students — “Essential Health Skills for Middle School” and “Essential Health Skills for High School” from Goodheart‑Willcox, covering textbooks, teacher resources and online access for the 2026–27 school year.
  • Recognition of student and staff achievements, a slate of personnel resignations and retirements, and administrative and professional appointments for the remainder of this year and for 2026–27.
  • A consent agenda motion to designate the First National Bank of Gillette as a depositor of public funds.

The contract for Alta Vista centers on upgrading the campus’ communication infrastructure — a combined intercom and public-address installation intended to serve routine announcements and emergency communications. The district budget line on the agenda includes a built-in contingency to cover unforeseen expenses during the project.

If trustees approve the textbook purchase, schools will adopt the Goodheart‑Willcox “Essential Health Skills” series for middle and high school students, with materials that pair print resources and teacher supports with online student access. The vendor and price cap appear in the consent items slated for a single vote.

Before the new-business votes, the board will honor recent competitive achievements by East High School teams, including the 4A State Girls Basketball Championship under Head Coach Eric Westling and the 4A Speech and Debate State Championship coached by Allen Pino. An employee spotlight will feature Central High School Associate Principal Nicholas Lamp, and the board will recognize recently named Students of the Week.

  • Students honored include Liam Escobedo (Carey Junior High, 7th grade), Sophia Carabajal (South High School, senior) and Shai Prime (East High School, senior).

Trustees are also expected to act on a package of personnel items: resignations and retirements already submitted, plus a series of administrator and professional appointments for the remainder of the current academic year and the 2026–27 school year.

Why this matters now: decisions on infrastructure and curriculum carry budget and operational consequences that play out across classrooms and campuses. Approving the intercom contract would commit district funds and a vendor relationship; adopting new health texts would set instructional materials and teacher supports for the upcoming school year.

Members of the public who wish to observe the meeting can attend in person at Storey Gym, join via the district’s Zoom link, or watch the live stream on YouTube.
