A Florida woman has been arrested after a man who came to help free her truck from a roadside ditch died at the scene, authorities say. The case, linked to a May 16 early-morning crash, raises fresh questions about responsibility and bystander safety on busy highways.
Police in central Florida booked 21-year-old Julia Blackwell on a charge described as leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in death. The victim, identified as 59-year-old Ronald Bear, was pronounced dead shortly before officers arrived, according to the criminal complaint reviewed by local reporters.
Sequence of events, as described by investigators
Investigators say Blackwell was traveling with friends when her silver pickup became mired in mud along a highway. She called Bear for help; he arrived with two relatives. Another pickup — described in the complaint as a black truck — was used to pull Blackwell’s vehicle free.

Witnesses told police Bear fastened a tow strap and the black truck pulled the silver pickup clear. As Bear moved to remove the strap, the complaint says Blackwell, seated behind the wheel of the silver pickup, accelerated and knocked Bear to the pavement. A witness later said Blackwell reversed and ran over Bear before driving away and becoming stuck again in mud.
One companion who was in Blackwell’s group said he did not see the impact but heard someone shout, “You killed him.” That witness reported Blackwell left the silver pickup with the tow strap still attached and climbed into the waiting black truck; both occupants then left the scene, the filing states.
According to the complaint, Blackwell returned to her mother’s home and later spoke with investigators. She told police she believed the vehicle remained stuck and, after hearing a “banging sound,” placed the truck in reverse and then heard Bear yelling while he was on the ground.

Emergency responders reached the location shortly before 6 a.m., and medical personnel had pronounced Bear deceased about 30 minutes earlier, according to the police timeline.
