Women Invited to Local Heart Health Event
Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, the Cheyenne Regional Heart and Vascular Institute and the CRMC Foundation are hosting a women’s event focused on heart health in the Clay Pathfinder Building at Laramie County Community College on February 2, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Heart disease has been the number one killer of women in the United States for many years,” said Mehdi Gheshlaghi, MD, a CRMC cardiologist who will be speaking at the event. “Lifestyle is a major reason why women continue to suffer from heart disease and experience heart attacks. Our goal with Wake Up to Women’s Heart Health is to educate and encourage women in our community to take a few simple steps to improve their health, with a special emphasis on the heart.”
Dr. Gheshlaghi will discuss risk factors that may lead to heart disease and what women can do to stay heart healthy through the decades.
“Heart disease is often associated with people who are in their fifties and beyond. But more and more we are seeing heart disease in younger women, often as the result of lifestyle choices they make many years before,” Dr. Gheshlaghi said. “We want women of all ages, including those in their teens and twenties, to know how they can safeguard their heart, to help them stay healthier in every decade of life.”
Other events will include a session on how to do hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation taught by CRMC clinical educators and a presentation by a local paramedic on how to help save someone having a heart attack. LCCC instructor Tracy Perko will also share her story of having a heart attack at age 46 and what she’s done to restore her health and sense of well-being. The event will end with a panel of CRMC heart experts answering questions from participants.
“Heart disease is responsible for about one in every four deaths for women in the United States,” Dr. Gheshlaghi said. “We want to be sure the women in our community know what they can do to lower their risks and live longer and healthier lives.”
