City of Cheyenne Passed Downtown Graffiti Abatement Pilot Program

The conversation of determining solutions for downtown graffiti began last fall with the City of Cheyenne, Cheyenne Police Department and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA).

During the City Council meeting on Monday, February 11th, the third reading of the Downtown Graffiti Abatement Pilot Program passed and will carry forward. The purpose of this ordinance is to provide a proactive approach to graffiti removal. The DDA would provide graffiti abatement services within a 48-hour window.

The DDA has approved a $5,000 contribution until end of the current fiscal year and a $15,000 commitment for next fiscal year for this pilot program.

Chief Brian Kozak of the Cheyenne Police Department, shared in a previous City Council meeting, “Volunteers paint over graffiti after a waiver is submitted by the property owner.”

The current process takes time, and therefore, this new ordinance will serve as a means to shorten the time required to address such issues in the downtown district.
