With news that the WyoTech campus in Laramie will close later this year, questions have arisen as to the role institutions such as Laramie County Community College could play in relation to the facilities and resources when that closure occurs.
This week, LCCC officials released a prospectus that sets forth details about this potential venture and explores options and considerations for the college.
“In short, we pulled together an exploratory team lead by a team of faculty, staff, community members, and others to develop the prospectus,” said Joe Schaffer, president of LCCC. “We have done our best to fairly and accurately represent the situation and to identify the specific conditions that would need to exist for any transition as it relates to LCCC.”
According to wording taken from the prospectus, the team considered two goals: “The primary goal of this team was to determine if and how LCCC, specifically its Albany County Campus (ACC), could become involved to ensure the positive impact WyoTech makes on the city of Laramie and state of Wyoming does not disappear. A secondary goal was to consider current and long-term needs of the ACC and how the WyoTech assets may help LCCC address those.”
Schaffer acknowledges that the state and local requirements are complex and significant, although they are not out of line with how the Wyoming community college model works now. Further, the prospectus provides a variety of short-term recommended approaches and several long-term recommended actions.
The LCCC Board of Trustees has reviewed the document, but no additional action has been taken at this time.
